Food Access

SNAP/EBT
When using your EBT card at the market, start by visiting the Info Booth to pick up a “shopping sheet.” This sheet lists all the market vendors and is where your purchases will be recorded. As you shop, each vendor will write down the amount you spend next to their farm name on the sheet. Once you’ve finished shopping, return to the Info Booth, hand in your completed shopping sheet, and your EBT card will be swiped for the total amount of your purchases. It’s that simple! Additionally, you’ll receive Maine Harvest Bucks based on the total of your EBT purchases—a bonus to help you enjoy even more fresh, local produce!
Maine Harvest Bucks are a special type of coupon that functions like cash at the market, but they can only be used to purchase fresh fruits, herbs, vegetables, and vegetable or herb garden seedlings. These Bucks are part of a promotion designed to encourage SNAP EBT recipients to buy more fresh produce at the market. As a result, they cannot be used for meats, eggs, dairy, baked goods, or other non-produce items.
The amount of Maine Harvest Bucks you receive is typically proportional to your EBT purchase. Often, this is on a 1-to-1 basis, meaning if you spend $25 with your EBT card, you’ll receive $25 worth of Maine Harvest Bucks to buy even more fresh food. The Bucks come in $1 and $5 denominations and can be used at any farmers’ market in Maine. However, they cannot be exchanged for cash, and any unused portion does not carry over as change. Harvest Bucks have no cash value outside of Maine farmers’ markets.
As a reminder, here are the guidelines using the following currencies accepted at your farmers’ market:
Market Currency:Accepted as payment for:
SNAP/EBTFood items to be eaten at home, and food-bearing seedlings/plants. (See USDA’s rules about using SNAP/EBT). This market uses a SHOPPING SHEET to record these transactions.
Maine Harvest Bucks: Use like cash for vegetables, fruits, food-bearing seedlings/plants.
WIC & Farmer's Market WIC
Some market members are able to accept both Farmers’ Market WIC and regular WIC payments. To use eWIC at market, your regular WIC card is not used. Instead, you will need to display your bar code, either on a piece of paper you got from your WIC office, or by using the free Bnft app on your phone. Simply display the bar code when it comes time to pay and your purchases will be deducted from your WIC account. If your purchases are greater than your Farmers’ Market WIC balance, the difference can be deducted from your regular WIC produce allotment. Cash Value Benefit (CVB), the monthly fruit and vegetable benefit, can also be used at market.
(Hint: Log in to your Bnft app before you get to market. Then display your bar code and snapshot it on your phone. Your bar code is now in your Photos and is easy to display without using the BNFT app at market.)
Maine Senior Farm Share
To participate in Maine Senior FarmShare, a person must:
â
-Be a Maine resident (citizenship not required).
-Be age 60 or over (age 55 or over for Native Americans or age 18 or over for disabled adults living in a senior living facility with a cafeteria).
-Have a gross annual household income (including all pensions, Social Security, and other payments) of no more than 185% of the poverty level.
-Maximum of $27,861/per year for a one-person household; or
-Maximum of $37,814/per year for a two-person household.
-After June 1st, stop by the Info Booth at market for further details and to sign up for Maine Senior Farm Share. Get $50 worth of coupons you can spend on fresh fruits and vegetables at the market that day or all season.
Bumper Crop
These are $5 denomination coupons distributed by businesses and municipalities across the state, intended for use exclusively at Maine farmers’ markets. The Orange Bumper Crop coupons can only be used to purchase fresh fruits and vegetables, while the Green Bumper Crop coupons can be used for any type of food sold at the market.
The Bumper Crop program is a promotional initiative run by the Maine Federation of Farmers’ Markets. This program ensures that vendors are reimbursed for all coupons redeemed, making it a win-win for both shoppers and farmers. By using these coupons, you’re supporting local agriculture and enjoying fresh, healthy food!
